The imposing building of the MoD Military History Institute and Museum is located in the north-western corner of Buda Castle, one of the most popular spots amongst tourists in Budapest.
The MoD Military History Institute and Museum’s principal aim is to research, uncover and organize the material heritage of Hungarian military history and related international military history, in close cooperation with local museums and organizations, in Hungary and abroad as well.
To pursue scientific research, in the field of military history and related sciences. Achievements of the collections and research are published to the public and to the academic public life. Other objectives are to publish the Quarterly of Military History (Hadtörténelmi Közlemények), and to have active cooperation with PhD courses.
One of the institute’s principal aims is to organize scientific conferences, international and Hungarian, but also manages the duties of supervision over museum collections and memorial places subordinated to military organizations or located at cooperating organizations.
The Institute also cooperates with historical reenactors and other civil organizations, and takes part in organizing scientific events, as well as educational and re-enactment programmes and ceremonies nationwide or held by the Hungarian Defence Forces.
Numerous people are attending the Library, the Map Collection or the Archives, but the most popular part is the Military History Museum due to its invaluable artefacts. The yearly attendance is well over 100,000, which obliges us to make our exhibitions more and more attractive to visitors.
In the courtyard of the building there is a park of sculptures and commemoration, where our guests can relax in a nice “green” ambient from spring to autumn.
A very important task is to take part in preserving national identity and patriotism, also forming, maintaining and strengthening the correct, impartial view of history.
